What to Expect of the Korean Folk Village

The Folk Village is an area that was specifically created as a live replica of an authentic village from the Joseon Era. Its goal is to preserve traditional culture and introduce it both to locals and to world travelers.

The scenery in the village is very quaint, with traditional houses, cobblestone streets, tall pine trees, and small, picturesque corners where you can take plenty of photos. What makes the Folk Village so special is that it truly reflects how people used to live during the Joseon Dynasty, harvesting power from water, washing clothes directly into the crystal clear river, and cooking in communal spaces.

Inside the Village, there are performances, activities, and actors roaming the streets. Morning Folk Village tour – Course Overview

We will begin by picking you up from your hotel in Seoul. Then, we will head over to the Folk Village in Yongin where we will see three special performances and have free time to explore and enjoy ourselves. Travel Back in Time at Minsokchon

Minsokchon, is the English spelling of the local word for “Folk Village” and is a live replica of a traditional Joseon village, located about an hour out of Seoul. Here, you will truly dive into the atmosphere of the olden days while walking across narrow bridges, visiting traditional houses, and sitting under the shade of a tall pine tree. You will walk by the wells that villagers used in order to produce energy because they didn’t have electricity back in the day. You will see the communal cooking areas and pots where rice used to be prepared by the local families.

At 245 acres, Minsokchon displays houses from varying layers of the society – you will see the traditional houses of peasants, landowners, and yangban who were the ruling class. The village is also complete with a market, called jumak. Here, you will see and taste traditional food such as Korean ice cream, winibini candy, Imsil cheese pizza, and railroad hotdogs. There are quaint tea houses and small restaurants that you can enjoy in order to have a complete Minsokchon experience! You will truly feel as if you’ve been transported back by a time machine!

Be Dazzled by the Dancers and Acrobats

During our visit to the Folk Village, we will see three unique performances. The performance areas are conveniently located next to one another. We will watch the “Farmer’s Music and Dance,” where talented dancers dressed in traditional blue and white hanbok perform a dance accompanied by drums, during which they show off tricks including fans, fast-spinning plates, and ribbons. If you’d like to participate, you can volunteer to do so!

Then, we will watch the tight rope walking show where a highly-skilled performer effortlessly makes his way across two tall posts, with the greatest precision, while making incredible jumps along the way! His performance includes comedy elements as well, to make it as entertaining as possible for you.

Finally, the equestrian feat will dazzle you with the incredible acrobatics which performers are able to accomplish on the back of a galloping horse, such as a three-person pyramid! The shows at Minsokchon are like nothing you’ve ever seen!
